How to Decorate with Throw Cushions

At Normandeau, we love window treatments, and we think we’ve made that pretty obvious over the years. But it’s long overdue for us to write a full blog on one of our other true loves: throw cushions. Is there any home accessory as versatile as pillows? They come in all shapes, sizes, and styles, and we love them all. Whether you’re looking for something dainty with lace or a ginormous floor cushion with a funky geometric pattern, we have the pillows you need. Unfortunately, while many of our customers greatly enjoy sorting through our huge pillow collection, many of them feel they just don’t know how to decorate with cushions.

Not to worry! Our experts are here to help!

Solid With Pattern Pairing.

People really like patterns. It’s one of the reasons that we find symmetry so attractive, and you can use this to your advantage when choosing your pillows. All you need to do for this simple pairing is choose one solid colour and one bold pattern. Then get two or three pillows of each. Try to take inspiration from your home. Imagine you have a sleek red, black, and creamy, neutral fibre palette for your living room. You have gorgeous undyed window coverings, a dark leather couch, wood floors, a black coffee table, and a red rug for a burst of colour. In this case, you might want a beige solid paired with a bright burgundy pattern.

Pick a Palette.

Regardless of whether you choose all patterns or all solids, this decorating technique will work as long as you remain true to your palette. Try to pick just two or three colours. Then, buy as many solids as you want in all three colours. You don’t need to have the same number of all your pillows either. You can have four reds, two oranges, and just a single blue. It doesn’t matter. This is also a great time to experiment with shapes and sizes! Have some big pillows, tiny pillows, cylinders, and spheres! Just keep to your palette and you’ll be fine. If you’d rather steer clear of solids, choose throws with very different patterns but identical colours. And as always, the more pillows the better!

All Florals All the Time.

Florals are a magical pattern where it’s impossible to have too many floral pillows and equally impossible to have a selection of floral pillows that clash. If you think you have a group of floral patterns that clash, then we’ll let you in on the secret to fix the group: vary the sizes of patterns.
