How-to: Choose and Hang a Drapery Rod
What type of drapery rod should I use and where should I hang it?
When choosing a drapery rod, consider if you would like the focus to be mostly on the drapery or if you would also like the rod to be a prominent feature of the treatment. A simple track or channel rod will offer a sleek, modern look that it less visible and allows the drapery to be the highlight. These types of drapery rods offer ease of function as the drapes are attached to the rod with glides, allowing for easy movement. A drapery rod with rings and decorative finials definitely adds a more traditional feel. The many choices of finishes (metal / wood) and finial styles will ensure that the rod become a very visible part of the overall treatment. The drapery with rings can also be moved, but will require a little more effort! If you are using this type of rod for stationary side panels, use a short rod for each panel as opposed to one that covers the full width of the window. Each short rod will have two decorative finials, adding even more interest and style to the treatment!
So you have found the perfect drapery rod to complement your style and drapery – but where should you hang the rod? There are some general rules of thumb, but trust your instincts as well!
- If there are 12” or more between the top of the window frame and the ceiling, hang the drapery rod halfway between the top the window frame and the ceiling for a balanced look.
- If there are less than 12” between the top of the window frame and the ceiling, hang the drapery rod directly below the ceiling to help make the ceiling look higher. This is also a good option if your ceiling is low, regardless of the space between the top of the window frame and the ceiling.
- If you have decorative window mouldings, show them off by hanging the drapery rod at the very bottom of the moulding, just above the window frame.
There is an amazing variety of drapery rod types and styles – your window covering designer can help you to choose the perfect one to complement your drapery, room style and functionality needs!
