Freshen up any Room with New Drapes

I know someone who has 150 year old curtains in their home.

Seriously. They hung in his family’s ancestral home in England during the time of Charles Dickens. They’re heavy, green velvet. Moths have been chewing on them for a century and a half so needless to say, they’ve seen better days. There’s no pattern or design. They would have been ideal during blackouts during the First and Second World Wars because not a single photon of light would be able to penetrate the thick, heavy fabric and lining. They would also stop a hurricane force blast of frigid air so they would have been perfect in a drafty Victorian mansion.

They’re interesting and unusual, but I have to ask myself, why, when there are so many great drapery fabrics and styles out there, would someone stick with the same drapes for 150 years?

When someone enters a room in your home what do you think catches their eye first?

Is it the couch? The art on the walls? The carpet? Chances are, it’s the window coverings. They’re at eye level, they typically cover a lot of wall space, and they can make or break the overall interior design of a room.

Draperies have been called furniture for windows for good reason. They’re available in a myriad of designs, fabrics, and patterns. They can be functional – blocking out light, noise, drafts, heat, and prying eyes. The can also be purely decorative – sculpture in fabric. When it’s time to dramatically change the appearance of a room, don’t neglect the drapes.
