Meet the Designer Series: Lori Sellmer
How did you get started and how long have you been in business?
I started my business seven years ago immediately following the birth of my second daughter. It started as part time here and there and has grown by referral to a full time, full service business. Previous to that I worked with one of Calgary’s largest home builders.
What is your business philosophy?
The interior design process should be collaborative and most of all fun! I enjoy my clients, and spend a lot of time getting to know who they are and how they live before we even think about starting to design. I really try to approach each project differently. My goal is always to leave them with a cohesive finished space that reflects their personal style and will stand the test of time.
Describe two things you have achieved in your business career that you are proud of.
As a business that has grown solely by referral, I’m very proud of my client relationships. We don’t advertise and it’s been an organic growth of happy homeowners referring their friends and associates.
What motivates you to get up everyday? WHY are you doing what you’re doing?
I love people, all things design, and travel. In that order. I try to have a lot of fun with my clients and not take myself too seriously. Truly, my clients motivate me. Working towards that moment at the end of the project when they see it all come together and love it is the reward.
Balancing a business and family with three little children isn’t always easy, but it’s so rewarding. In particular, I have two daughters that I want to see their mom going after her dreams and achieving her goals.
Why do your clients use your services?
The design process (particularly new construction and renovation) can be a long and intimidating process if you don’t have the right professional to guide you. The number of moving parts and decisions to be made shouldn’t be underestimated. As a designer that has a background as an architectural technologist, and specializes in interior decorating too, I have a thorough knowledge of the entire building process from start to finish. I have the experience and foresight to trouble shoot and see problems before they even are one. Our diverse portfolio of work and beautiful finished projects helps too.
Tell us about yourself!
I was born and raised in Calgary. In 1999 I got my Diploma from SAIT in architectural technologies and worked as a draftsperson and designer for one of Calgary’s largest homebuilders. While I was there, I had an opportunity to move to their interior design department and discovered my passion for design. In 2007 my husband and I moved to Barcelona for two years, followed by London, England for about a year. We fell in love with Europe and a lot of the character and eclectic style you see in my design comes from there. Eventually, job opportunities brought us back to family and friends and I returned to work with the home builder. After the birth of my second daughter, I decided to start my own business!
I have three adorable children 9, 7 (girls) and a two year old boy. We’re an outdoorsy, active family that you can find on bikes or skis depending on the season. We absolutely love to travel as a family and try to get back to Europe as often as we can.
